Suns Of Re-Awakening

Community Garden Project
Community Bulletin Subject: The Ongoing Economic Crisis and the Impeding Food Crisis
Many of you know of Suns of Reawakening (SOR) for the voluntary deeds we provide in the community through yard care and landscaping or perhaps you’re familiar with us by way of our recent and successful Winter Coat Drive that provided warm clothing to over 40 children during the past holidays. For those not familiar with Suns of Reawakening, the organization was started a year ago with the expressed purpose of addressing the many problems that beset African people in this country with our focus being Frederick City/County. As we approach our one year anniversary, we are finalizing plans to launch our community lecture series on progressive topics surrounding history, spirituality, health, politics, family, and education to name a few. Additionally, we will continue with our voluntary deeds to the community, as well as soliciting suitable land resources for a community garden.
The U.S. and world economy has been in a severe crisis for a number of years and there appears to be no end in sight. Many political analyst and economist are predicting a period of increased poverty and unemployment. For decades, our people have historically been at the top of both the poverty and unemployment list. The government at best is absent in providing meaningful employment for our youth, yet bankers are permitted to steal/foreclose on the homes of black people. Even more sobering is the fact that our youth are sent to prison while those same bankers get richer. The members of SOR are preparing for this disaster before it strikes to prevent more harm and minimize the damage. By not taking action before these looming crises, SOR would be deemed irresponsible and derelict in our commitment to our people. The recent cut in food stamps and similar social services has already impacted many local residents, as they have seen their food stamps drop to below $20 per month. Now is not the right time to debate the politics of such decisions, SOR wants to ensure there is a safety net that catches African people for history reveals that our people will be the last to get help. We are putting these plans in place as a demonstration of our collective responsibilities for our survival.
Food is very vital to everyone’s existence and therefore Suns of Reawakening is asking for the community to help with the organizing of community gardens. As part of our deeds program we will be offering our services to assist those families that would like to convert their yards into vegetable gardens. In addition, we are seeking those in the community or someone you may know with yard space or acreage that won’t be used, to consider making it available to SOR for community use in return for a share of the produce. We are also asking for help from those with knowledge and skill in agriculture to lend their skills to this venture.
