ABOUT US
Suns of Re-Awakening Mission Statement
The mission of Suns of Re-Awakening is to facilitate holistic community healing, communal concepts and cultural awareness through the Nguzu Saba (Seven Principles) which are: Umoja (unity), Kujichagalia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (co-operative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith). We utilize the means of community lectures, workshops, group mentoring, and sponsorship as the form of communication to affect a wholesome and unified transformation under the guiding principles of Maat—truth, justice, righteousness, and reciprocity. Suns of Re-awakening acknowledge and hold in high regards the achievements, advances, and gains made by our people through the hundreds of years since we’ve been in this country. These achievements and accomplishments have contributed heavily to the advancement, and enlightment of “mankind”, this nation and to the world at large. In spite of these contributions, a present day glimpse of the world will reveal a place that is increasingly inhospitable to the totality of life and accomplishments made by African people throughout the world. When viewed from afar, the images of African people and our place on the world stage is one that our ancestors just one generation back would not recognize. As a result of this perpetual unjust treatment collectively, we are beginning to witness the downward spiral of a country that has fallen victim to its own inequitable behaviors towards us for so many years—a tailspin the likes of which it is unlikely to recover. For those of us who are truly conscious of the “mighty” pedestal toppling, and knowing our relationship to this system, it is imperative that we begin to transform ourselves as to avoid complete cultural and spiritual destruction from this falling pedestal. As we accept our roles and responsibilities bestowed upon us in the battle for our total liberation, Suns of Re-Awakening’s intent is not to continue to align our people with a misguided vessel; but, to overturn behavioral patterns inherited into our souls from years and years of emotional, spiritual, and physical assault. Indeed, some of which were self-inflicted, but most of which were impose upon us from the outside. And, even though many of our people have been able to benefit from some of the advancements achieved in this country, it has come with a terrible price tag. Our current social conditions have prompted us to convene, to recognize and to formulate a plan of action which will begin reversing the long term damage done to us and our people. We must Sankofa our way back in order to move towards the future and restore our communities to a wholesome place absent of suffering and hardship such that it will never rear its ugly head again.
